Description
This depicts a tropical bird among elaborate vegetation with flowers and spear-shaped leaves. There are small posies of flowers and leaves on the quartered brim. Bunches of flowers appear in a more illustrative style on the reverse in blue on white. The plate is marked on the base by the coat of arms of Savona, close to Genoa, from where it came. This plate is decorated in a style called “naturalistic calligraphy”. It combines an eagerness to depict plant and animal motifs in a natural way with a delineation of figures by means of subtle dark strokes, like fine calligraphy. The model is derived from certain Porcelain chinas from the Ming Dynasty, which markedly influenced European workshops.
