Description
Colourful plate made using the cuerda seca technique, which depicts a star in kaleidoscope. The niches display alternate colours of blue, green, white and honey - the last is not very well preserved. The reverse is covered with white opaque glaze. There were instances of the cuerda seca decorative technique since at least the 10th or early 11th century, but it began to flourish again at the end of the 15th century. At this time there were several workshops using this technique. Those in Toledo and especially Seville were particularly notable, and this piece almost certainly comes from the latter. It specialised mainly in tiles made using an almost industrial method of cuerda seca.
