COIN FROM CERET OR CERIT
Bronze.
Diameter: 1.97 cm. Thickness: 0.22 cm.
Hispano-Roman. First half of the 1st century B.C.
Origin
Unknown. Jerez de la Frontera. Cádiz.
Description
On the obverse (front) is a depiction of a female head turned to the right, with hair pulled into a bun at the neck. The word 'CER' appears on the reverse between two ears of wheat lying to the right with a marked border. It is worth one semis - the equivalent to half an as - which indicates adaptation to Roman monetary patterns. For this reason it is included among the indigenous Latin coins. This coin is linked to the city of Ceret, the assumed Roman origin of modern Jerez. Some experts currently believe that this city was located in the sierra de Gibalbín to the north of Jerez's urban centre.
