Height: 20.8 cm. Diameter at mouth: 3.4 cm. Maximum diameter: 9.1 cm.
Visigoth period. 6th - 7th century A.D.
Origin
Country house in La Peñuela. Jerez de la Frontera. Cádiz.
Description
Single-handled, high-footed, hollow piriform jusg. The neck, the throat and the foot are marked by protuding ridges. The jug's elegant profile appears to be imitating metal lithurgic models. It may have had a funeral context, as two sarcophagi - one Paleo-Christian from the early 5th century and a later example from the 6th -7th century - were also found in the same place. Although the shape is very characteristic of the Hispano-Visigoth period, it has developed from similar pieces from the Late Roman period. Similarly, it is the prototype for certain jugs from the Emiral and Caliphal periods.
