Late Medieval Christian.  Second half of the 14th century.

Description

The inside is decorated in intense cobalt blue under pewter covering, with a motif of highly geometric radial leaves. The pewter glaze also covers the back of the piece. Medieval Valencia pottery workshops in Paterna and Manises, among others, manufactured a huge quantity of decorated pottery in blue on white throughout the 14th and 15th century. By doing so they created a mass-produced and widespread utilitarian product. Crockery decorated in this pattern seems to have begun after the third quarter of the 14th century. Documents reveal that commercial exchanges between Valencia and Jerez began to take place at this time - these would become much more intensive in the 15th century.
