Modern Age. Middle of the 16th century.

Santo Domingo cloisters. Jerez de la Frontera. Cádiz.

Description

This fragment from a polychrome earthenware fruit bowl was manufactured in workshops in the town of Montelupo, Toscana. It has a characteristic bell-shaped foot and depicts the face of Eolo, the classical god of the winds. The decoration is completed by a border displaying plant and military motifs – a drum known as “decoro a trofei”. The 16th century was a period of great economic and commercial growth in the Iberian Peninsula. This brought with it artists, books, ideas and all sorts of products. Italian ceramics in particular acquired great prestige as a sign of fashion and good taste in this cultured and prosperous society.
