Description
Decorated on the upper third with stamped impressions. It has a band of horizontal printed canes on the rim and two bands on the body: one of vertical finger-printed leaves and the second epigraphic, which repeats the word yumn or al-yumn: happiness. This short expression appears fairly frequently in pieces from the period, and has a preventative or protective sense. The use of writing on any kind of item is generally very common in the medieval Arabic-Islamic world. It also has a double meaning: decorative and ornamental. The caligraphy is beautifully traced and has a symbolic-religious sense, due to the sacred nature of Arabic for Muslims.
