Dimensions: 13x13 cm. Thickness: 0.8 cm.
Modern Age. End of the 17th century - 18th century.
Origin
Jerez de la Frontera. Cádiz.
Description
Painted blue tile to cover a wall, with a scene framed in a tondo. It is finished off in each corner by a schematisation of ox heads. The style is very skilful and relaxed, and is bursting with popular jokes. This scene represents the “flight to Egypt”. In the 17th century, ceramic manufacturers in Dutch cities began to compete furiously with Italian potters, particularly the Genoese, for the control of European markets. They managed to oust the latter in the 18th century. The main production centres were in Rotterdam, and particularly in Delft.
